Woodworking

Bookshelf (1994)

This was one of my first projects. It was constructed in pine and poplar, with a clear polyurethane finish. The end slats were intended to be a light echo of the Arts and Crafts style of the house we were living in at the time.

Endtable (1995)

This was an anniversary present for Vicki. It was constructed out of oak, except for poplar slats in the drawer, and finished using a golden oak stain similar to the one used in my old house in Ithaca. The legs were hand-tapered using an ordinary hand plane. The drawer sides represent my first dovetailing effort.

Bureau (1997)

This was a Christmas present for Vicki, constructed on and off over an eighteen month period. It was made out of pine, stained using a combination stain and varnish. The style is largely shaker in concept.

Sideboard (1998)

This was built beginning in Christmas 1998, and finished up in Spring 1999. It was made of pine, and stained cherry red to match the secretary desk in our dining room. The piece is joined with mortise and tenon construction, and took less than six hours to complete, except for finishing.

Cabinet (1999)

This is another piece that took over a year to construct. It was fabricated from a load of 1"X12" x 10 foot boards that were delivered to my house in 1998. Individual components of the piece were ripped from the larger boards using a hand saw and trued using a jointer plane given to me by my brother. The drawer is dove-tailed, and the raised door panels were constructed using the jointer and a bullnose plane. The piece is currently located in my office, where it supports an antique merchant's sideboard. The sideboard was purchased from my elementary school teacher, who sold antiques as a hobby.
