These are some of the walking sticks
that I have carved. A few of the things you will see here are a dragonfly, a frog, a sun face, an American flag, a lizard, some snakes, and other things.
I use a very sharp knife and the natural shapes of the wood with a little bit of imagination (some artists who work with wood call this vision).
I still have a few that I am working on at this time. Most of the ones you will see here have already been sold but you can use the photos to see what type of work I do.
This is a picture of the third snake stick that I have done. I finally finished it.
I had been carving on this stick for at least 6 years or more. The actual striping of the bark and the detail of the head and down some of the neck was finished not long after starting but when it came to the scaly body detail I was having a hard time staying interested in finishing on it.
Even before it was anywhere near completed I had many offers on this particular stick. I believe that was because of how the vine had strangled such a realistic snake shape into the wood while it was growning that it looks more like a real snake crawling around the stick. I did not have to change much of the woods spiral to make the snake complete. Most of the carving was the head shaping, head detailing and the scale detail on the body of the snake.
I sold it to a nice man in MS who appreciates art and snakes. That was enough incentive to get me back interested in my art again. Thank you Bill and Susan.

This is one that I have had in my head for a short while. I just started on it in August of 2000. I have always liked dragon flies and have many good memories that flash up in my head when I see one.
I was debating if I should even begin this one as a dragon fly is so small. It was just going to be the dragon fly all on it's own on the stick until I visioned a cat's tail right below the dragon fly. That cat tail made me remember back when I had lived in Florida. I remember riding in the back seat of our Blazer. We were going on a weekend trip to some out of the way place. My mom in the front passenger seat and my little sister beside me. My step father pulled to the side of the road and picked us a cat tail. I am embarassed to say at the age that I was that it was the first time I had really noticed a cat tail. I cherished that cat tail. I kept it with me till I got home and tried to preserve it as best I could. But eventually it dried out and became a big puff of fluff and fell all apart. I had that cat tail for nearly three years before it came apart. My little sister played with her cat tail and banged it on things till it all flew apart to nothing but a bare stick. But anyway, I thought that this dragon fly would look good sitting on the cat tail so I added that memory in on this stick. The grass that criss-crosses over the stem of the cat tail turns into ribbon at the base of the stem.
Now as of 2/11/02 I have started on adding a Blue Heron to the top of this cane. The neck of the
Blue Heron fades into the dragon fly and cat tail.
I have decided to call this stick my

This is a wood spirit on a small disk of wood that my husband was cutting for our smoker. I saw the pieces he had cut and snagged two of them to try out these wood spirits that I have seen on the net. It was fun and a learning experience trying to get depth into that flat piece of wood. I am still not finished with it. When I stained it the piece went too dark. When I sanded some of the dark color it took the detail out of the eyes. I may need to put that detail back in the eyes unless I get someone who tells me they like it like it is with the hollow looking eyes. I will use a lighter stain to coat the bare wood that I had to sand out. I will get another scan up when I get it finished.
I would like to do more of them but not this small. maybe on a large log or large disk-cut piece of wood.

I finally finished the Totem Pole stick. This is the one with the FROG on it for all you frog lovers. It took me nearly 2 and a half years to get it done. The work was done on a few hours hear and a few hours there basis, not constant. This one has a red eyed green tree frog climbing up the stick, a smiling sun burst, a twig with three leaves, my hand, and a Bald Eagle head on top. To view what the Totem Pole stick looks like in detail click on the eagle head below which tops the stick.
