Born: May 10, 1960

His mother (Iris) died of a stroke while attending Bono's grandfather's funeral. Bono was fourteen. Bono says that he wakes up one morning shortly thereafter and realizes that these two people are gone

He grew up with his brother Norman (seven years Bono's elder), and his father Bob. Bono says it was tough because these "Irish males" did not talk or show emotion about the loss of Iris

Many of U2's songs from early albums (Boy, October) dealt with the loss of Bono's mother

The Name Bono came from the name of a Dublin hearing aide store called Bono Vox of oConnel street. Bono Vox being latin for "good voice". It is rumored that he was given this name because he was very loud and free to speak his mind

On August 21st, 1982, he married his high school sweetheart, Alison Stewart

Often flew back to Dublin after shows during the Elevation tour to sit bedside with his father, who was battling cancer. Much of the "All that you can't leave behind" and "How to dismantle an atomic bomb" albums deal with his father's longtime battle with cancer and his eventual death from the disease - He sang an early version of "Sometimes you can't make it on your own" at his father's funeral
