Neither I nor Alltel/Windstream/Your ISP/Anyone else will be held accountable for what you or anyone else does inside your router or on your computer or any software you download and/or install. If you change/remove/corrupt something up on your computer or router or equipment and someone has to fix it or replace it for you and charge you money/services/beer for fixing it then it's your responsibility not mine nor is it Alltel/Windstream's or your ISP's or anyone else's. I give you the information that I have learned/found/acquired. What you do with it is up to you. Do not email me with questions or complaints about why your router/computer/equipment/etc. doesn't work. I cannot guarantee that this config or these settings or information on this site will work for everyone. I can't test all solutions possible because I don't know them all and there are not enough hours in the day/week/month/year for me to test every combination possible. I have tested/used these configurations/software and they work for me. I am just letting my findings be open to help others in times of need at no cost. If you do not understand these instructions/configurations/software or are afraid that you will mess up the computer/router/equipment/software then you will want to contact a computer/network technician to help fix/configure/build what you need done.
To save space I have set decreased the size of the images, if you need to see the image in full size just click on them.
To Create a VPN Connection, double click on your My Compuer icon then double click into Dialup Networking.. Note: you must have vpn adapter installed to use this. For instructions for windows 98 and ME clickHERE
Next, double click on the Make New Connection Icon.
In here type in the name of the connection. This will be the VPN between your computer and your router.
Next select Microsoft VPN Adapter for the device then hit next.
When asked for the Host name or IP Address put in the router's internal IP address, (by default that should be 10.0.0.1)
And then hit the Next button
On the confirmation page just hit Finish and your new connection should be created.
Now we have to make some corrections to the default settings of your VPN connection. In Dialup Networking, right click on your Efficient VPN connection then select properties.
Next click on Server Types. In here make sure that Log onto network & Enable software compression are checked. Do not check Require Encrypted password or data encryption. Remember this is the VPN connection between your computer and router, Not your 3rd party VPN connection. Next click on the TCP/IP Settings button.
In the TCP/IP settings set to Specify name server addresses. For the primary and secondary DNS put in the Alltel DNS numbers (Or the DNS numbers of your ISP if you are not using Alltel) Then hit OK on here and OK on the previous screen.
In Dialup Networking double click on the New VPN connection. For the userid and password choose the same userid and password you put in to setup your router under the "SIMPLE SETUP AREA" of your router config. Once you have the userid and password entered in hit the connect button. After this connects on then you should be able to access the internet or your VPN.
To check your IP address, Windows 98 and ME come with a handy program called winipcfg. Click on your start button then run and in the Open dialog type in winipcfg then hit OK
In the adapter box, you may have 2 selections for PPP adapter, choose the second PPP adapter and your information should look similar to the example.
One of the CONS of setting up your DSL connection like this is that you will no longer be able to have multiple computers hooked up to the router. In order for you to use multiple computers hooked up to your DSL you will have to make use of internet connection sharing which comes with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP, I'm not sure about WinNT. Or you may have to use a cable/dsl router like a Linksys BEFSR41. Another thing that you may want to be aware of is that now that you have given your computer a routable IP address, your computer is now vulnerable to the internet. Your computer does not have the protection of NAPT. It is up to you to find a firewall program to protect your computer not me or your ISP. If your computer or network gets compromised don't come to me or your ISP.
