Syracuse Public Library Internet Use Policy

Introduction

In response to the changing needs of our community, the Syracuse Public Library is developing resources and services which meet the cultural, educational, informational, and recreational needs of Syracuse's growing community.

Information and resources on the Internet may inhance those already held in the library and often go beyond what is locally available.   Please remember that you will still find specific, accurate, and up-to-date information in our books and periodicals.

Responsibility of Users

All users of electronic information resources, such as the Internet, are expected to use these resources in a responsible manner, consistant with the educational and informational purposes for which they are provided and to follow the Library's rules and regulations.

By using a public Internet workstation at the Syracuse Public Library you agree to the following guidelines:

  1. Use electronic resources for cultural, educational, informational, and recreational purposes only:  not for unauthorized or illegal purposes.
  2. Make only authorized copies of copyrighted or licensed software data.
  3. Do not send, receive, or display materials which may be construed as obscene.
  4. Respect the privacy of others using public access workstations at the library by not interfering with their use.
  5. Abide by time limitations set forth by the librarian.
  6. Do not make any changes to the setup or configuration of the library computer software or hardware.

Internet Access

The Syracuse Public Library does not monitor and has no control over information accessed through the Internet and cannot be held responsible for its content.   The Internet and its resources may contain controversal or inappropriate marterial, but the Syracuse Public Library does not restrict access or protect users from information that they may find offensive.  Customers use the Internet at their own discretion.

Be advised that not all sources on the Internet provide accurate, complete, or current information.   Users should carefully judge the worth of these sources of information as they would any other resource.   Just as libraries do not vouch for or endorse the viewpoints of written material in their collections, they do not do so for electronic information.   Library selection policies which serve to govern purchases of written materials may not apply to material accessed electronically.   Also be advised that files transmitted or transactions made over the Internet may not always remain private.    The Syracuse Public Library assumes no responsibility for any damages, direct or indirect, arising from the use of its connection to the Internet.

Parents or guardians are responsible for the Internet information selected and/or accessed by their children.   Children who use the Internet unsupervised may be exposed to inappropriate or disturbing information and images.   Parents are encouraged to discuss the use of the Internet, in relation to family values and boundaries, with their children and to monitor their children's use of the Internet.

All children under 18 must have written permission from parent/guardian to use the Internet at the Syracuse Public Library.
