About Performance
Improvement in
Small Organizations

     Small organizations seldom have the luxury of specialized leadership teams. Members of their leadership teams usually wear multiple hats and are often involved in hands-on work alongside the employees they supervise. Without even basic leadership training they are thrust into "sink or swim" situations. As a result, they find themselves operating in an event-driven mode and the topic of performance improvement gets lost in their day-to-day efforts to survive. The organization suffers, and its customers, clients or patients also lose out. In today's ever changing and highly competitive environments organizations that operate in that mode place themselves at great risk. They are in danger of becoming roadkill along the highway to the future.

An effective leadership team is the foundation upon which a dynamic performance improvement culture is built. Our efforts to assist organizations in the area of performance improvement place an emphasis on the development of a highly effective leadership team. The organization's survival depends on it.

     Having a diversity of life experiences enables me to relate to, draw from, and serve a wide variety of organizational cultures. I grew up on a dairy farm in western Pennsylvania, where I gained an appreciation for hard work and was instilled with a strong work ethic. Upon graduating from high school, I enlisted in the Army and served a tour of duty in Europe, bringing me into contact with the international community. When my military service ended, I attended and graduated from Clarion State University, Clarion, Pennsylvania. That educational experience, together with graduate studies at St. Bonaventure University, opened the door to teaching, and led to a long productive career in the school system. Subsequent to teaching, I served as assistant principal, principal, and eventually, superintendent.

      Retirement from my school system-based career has provided the opportunity to take my broad background to new venues, and to provide an independent, fresh, creative perspective in dealing with frustrating problems and other organizational needs. The array of experiences has imparted a particular sensitivity to rural and small-to-moderate-sized organization issues.
