Movie: Hideous Kinky
Rating: 8 -- Very Good
Comments: True story based upon the childhood of Sigmund Freud's great granddaughter during the 1970's. A young mother leaves England with her 2 daughters to find spiritual fulfillment in Morocco. Some scenes are not appropriate for the kids (although Anna watched and enjoyed the movie.) The movie doesn't gloss anything over and it is a sometimes gritty slice of life. Kate Winslet gives a very good performance far from her Titanic image.

Comments: A movie I really wanted to like, but it just didn't quite have enough. Michael Caine is just great as an aging, boozy talent agent who discovers a silent, shy young woman called Little Voice who worships her late father but must live with her mean spirited and drunken mother (played by the incredible Brenda Blethyn who starred in one of my all time favorite films "Secrets and Lies" - see that one instead).

Comments: St. Paul is the boyhood home of the late great Charles Schultz. To honor him, the city has erected 75 statues of Snoopy is 75 different costumes in 75 different locations. The Snoopy's are very cute, just the right size for kids to hug. It's fun to drive about and spot the famous beagle and you can never tell where he might show up. The Snoopys will only be around during the summer. Bronze statues of all the Peanut characters will be on permanent display at one of the downtown city parks later complete with the theme music of the Charlie Brown specials.

Movie: X-Men
Rating: 7 -- Good
Comments: A fun summer movie. Some impressive special effects and a few funny lines, but it was a little hard to warm up to. I suppose if you are a follower of the X-Men comic books (about a bunch of good super-heroes battling a bunch of bad super-heroes) it's more of a treat, but the rest of us get thrown in the water and we have to swim fast to keep up. The movie has some big names in it -- Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan -- but the picture really rides on the shoulders of newcomer Hugh Jackman, who looks kind of like Aidan Quinn doing an impression of Clint Eastwood. He's really good, and without him the movie would have been kind of weak. Anyway, it won't change your life, but it's a good popcorn-movie.

Movie: Being John Malkovich
Rating: 5 -- Not Too Good
Comments: Well, I wish in the ratings category that there was a number 11, for weird...... Just a strange movie about a porthole into this actor, John Malkovich's, head. It's got a good enough cast, Cameron Diaz, & John Cusak. But the story is a little out there, a puppeteer who finds work filing all day in an office building on the 7 1/2th floor, where if I worked there, all I'd be filing would be a workman's comp claim, for constant neck spasms, as the ceiling is about 4 feet from the ground. Really strange, but I was bored & paid 3.95 for PPV. What a waste I say? Unless maybe it's another one of those Fargo things........

Movie: Dogma
Rating: 4 -- Bad
Comments: They got the title almost right; just take off the last two letters.... If you're looking for an irreverent comedy, which is the way this movie is advertised, this will be a disappointment. It begins well enough, with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as two fallen angels scheming to get back into heaven, and the first fifteen minutes or so with them (and with Alan Rickman as the Messenger of God) are enjoyable. But very soon the movie becomes too talky -- even "preachy," in an odd way -- and you find yourself glancing at the clock.... To prevent these two angels from getting back into heaven, the movie introduces some really unlikable characters as a sort of heavenly SWAT team, one of whom is the writer/director of the movie Kevin Smith. Smith gives himself waaaay too much face-time; he makes Quentin Tarantino look camera-shy. In the scenes where the talkiness is at a minimum, it becomes a convoluted action picture with lots of gun-play, which is puzzling considering most of the characters in this movie are beings with the powers of Creation at their fingertips and shouldn't have much need for automatic weapons. In the big finale, God -- who in most theologies but apparently not in Smith's is omnipotent -- has become trapped in a human body, and needs the help of the SWAT team (led by the anti-talented Linda Fiorentino, who here plays the great-great-great-whatever-grandniece of Jesus) to get free. This movie tries to pass itself off as a thought-provoking look at modern religion, but the "religion" it postulates is a crazy mixture of mis-remembered Sunday School stories, Greek mythology, and I think some Pokemon; and the harshest criticism it makes of Catholicism is the selling of indulgences which, to be fair, the Church hasn't done for like five hundred years now, and by the way Martin Luther already criticized much more effectively. Oh, also, Smith saved a lot of money on special effects: whenever something big happens, he cuts to the amazed expressions on peoples' faces as they watch it happen. The movie runs 130 minutes, and at the end you'll wish you had them back to live over again.
