Gravy's Story

Gravy was given to my daughter, Crystal, by her ex-fiancé, Jon, as a gift.  He bought Gravy at a flea market.  She was the only bunny that came hopping up to him when he put his hand in the cage - all the other bunnies ran and hid.  She started out the first couple of days of her life with a little cardboard box for a home in Jon's room (she was allowed out to hop around).  Crystal called me and here's how the conversation went:

Crystal:  "Mom, guess what I have?"

      Me:  "What?"

Crystal:  "A baby bunny!"

Me:  "No!  We're not having any animals in the house!  You'll have to let it live with Jon and see it when you're over there."

Crystal:  "Awww....but it's so cute!  Can I at least bring it home and show you?"

Me:  "I guess so, but it still has to live at Jon's house."

Crystal:  "Okay, we'll be there in a few minutes."

Well, she walked in a few minutes later with this furry little bundle, and as soon as I saw it, my heart melted!  Such a sweet face, and so tiny!  I did the only thing I could do at that point:

Me:  "Okay, you can keep it here.  But you have to clean its cage!"

And, she did.  She had gone and bought a regular cage with a plastic bottom and lined it with newspaper.  This got to be a hassle because it wasn't very absorbent, so we tried puppy pads.  Someone told me that rabbits could learn to use a litter box, so I decided that maybe it would be easier if we litter trained her.  I bought a corner box for her cage and a bag of kitty litter (I didn't know any better at the time).

She did very well with the litter box in her cage, but we could only get her out on the kitchen floor because she didn't do very well outside the cage.  I started spending a lot of time with her because my daughter worked in the evening, and she was good company.  The more time I spent with her, the more I fell in love, and pretty soon I was the one feeding her and cleaning her cage, and I didn't mind it a bit!

I started reading about bunny care online and corrected the things we were doing wrong.  I changed her litter to Carefresh and started giving her fresh vegetables and hay to go along with her pellets.  We were getting along great and I was thinking of getting her spayed and adopting a friend for her so she wouldn't be lonely.  Then in April a new bunny hopped into our lives.
