Hockey Quote of the week:   Jaromir Jagr and Matthew Barnaby spent some time joking around doing impressions of each other. Says Jagr, "He’s easy to do. Sit on the bench. Play about 10 minutes a game.."

December 10th, 2006:  game post by Bob Boden Stars Center:

Stars Prevail over RCCM in OT, 2-1

Advance to defend the Keg against Team Asterisk

It would almost be better if one team just blew the other team away but for the past 4 or 5 meetings, the Stars and RCCM go toe-to-toe until one team blinks.  On Sunday night, RCCM blinked.

Knotted at 0-0 after 1, the first period was a battle back and forth between two teams that seemed to be playing not to lose instead of to win.  Both goalies brushed aside numerous shots until the last 30 seconds of the 2nd period.  That’s when the Stars Defense got caught out of position for a weak-side goal and with the 1-0 lead, RCCM had all the momentum.

Fortunately, they relaxed just a bit too much and the Aaron and Todd Hawkins hooked up for a goal early in the 3rd to bring it back to a tie at 1-1.  The final 10 minutes seemed to last an hour and both sides skated hard and had many chances.  The Stars had two shots scratch the paint of the pipes within the last minute of regulation but Chris Bush covered any chance for a rebound goal.

< style="color: rgb(0, 102, 0);">Jeremy Cooley took an odd-rush opportunity and instead of winding up for one of his trademark slap-shots, he half-wound for a spot-on pass that Aaron Bilbro finished like a plate full of boneless Teriyaki wings.  Not a bad one-timer for one who at one-time claimed not to be able to one-time.

It was a fitting end to the game considering that RCCM had caught the Stars twice in a row with a last-second goal during the regular season.  But once again, the Stars elevated their game when it matters and earned a date against Rob Jenkins’ Team Asterisk, (formally known as the Sioux.)

The Sioux* sliced through the regular season with their sticks set on ‘stun’.  They skated on, through and around every team with nary a mild hiccup en route to the first round bye before dispatching Team Labatts.  Jenkins has assembled a monster squad that probably should have just called themselves The Wings so they could save time by not changing jerseys after their B League games.

Nevertheless, the Stars hope to represent the rest of the C+ league well and show the Sioux* what a Stanley Keg Bye is.

For a close look, let’s see how both teams match up based on the unofficial rosters that have been turned in to the front office:

Right Wing

Sioux* - Cam Neely – 6 foot 1, 215 from British Columbia.  Not much is known about Cam other than he shares the same name as Todd Edward’s son Cam Edwards.  He had a brief TV acting career doing some commercials for ESPN2 where his most memorable line was “You guys want to kick my dog while you’re here?”

StarsTodd Edwards – 6 foot 2, 185 lbs from Peoria, IL, Todd is so into hockey that he was once quoted as stating, “I’d give my left eye to win the Stanley Keg”.  (Too bad Todd didn’t pledge his left eye for something more ambitious like winning Powerball).

Jeremy Cooley – 5 foot 11, 190 from Bremin, Germany.  Jeremy is the Dark Horse of the Stars.  He’s got the ability to change the game when he decides to play hard.  Goalies everywhere fear his slap shot but his wind-up is so slow, you may nod off before he gets the shot off.

Left Wing

Sioux* - Mario Lemieux – 6 foot 4, 235, from Montreal, Canada.  Super Mario played some pick-up in Pittsburgh, PA and one of those weird guys who keeps his own stats and he claims to have scored about 1700 points.

Stars – Aaron Bilbro – 5 foot 8, 190, from N’albany, IN.  There’s no way Aaron is only 190.  Maybe in high school but nevertheless, he’s deceptively crafty and according to Chris Bush, (respected RCCM Goalie), he’s developing a good one-timer.

Joe Still – 6 foot 2, 235 from Brocton, Mass.  Joey-Joe-Joe Shabadoo is the Stars version of a Hefty Lefty.  He’s looking forward to going at the Sioux’s Left Wing who hails from Pittsburgh

Center –

< style="color: rgb(0, 102, 0);">Sioux* -  Mark Messier – 6 foot 2, 205 from St. Albert, Alberta, Canada.  Nicknamed ‘The Moose’, Mark hung out in Edmonton as a youngster before moving to New York.  He’s recently retired and decided on the C+ league instead of the over 30 league because he has played some organized hockey before.

Stars - Todd Hawkins – 5 foot 9, 175 from Louisville.  Todd is your lunch pail player.  He’ll dig in the corner against someone twice his size and his only speed is ‘GO’.  He won’t overpower you but you aren’t going to get anything easy from him.

Bob Boden – likes to think he’s 5 feet 10.  All 135 pounds are from Louisville.  Kind of like Todd Hawkins Light, he has his moments and knows enough about the game to contribute, whether from passing or back-checking.

Defense

< style="color: rgb(0, 102, 0);">Sioux* - Claude Lemieux and Ray Borque – Two guys who are real mysteries.  They play good-cop, bad-cop but we don’t know which is which.  Claude has apparently hit someone so hard that they guy’s hair changed color but the rumor on that joke was that the guy’s hair only changed to red because of all the blood.  Ray was supposedly a class act but was no stranger to the Penalty Box having logged over 1000 in his career.

Sioux BenchChris Smith – faster than a bowel movement after a night of White Castles with Old Milwaukee.  Landon McEwan, should be drunk at game time but somehow puts it all together.  Rob Jenkins – ‘The Architect’ has assembled an impressive roster for his elusive quest for the Keg.  You’d think that the guy who actually built the keg wouldn’t have such a complex about winning it.  The Rest – the rest of the Sioux we don’t know much about because our link to the team rosters from the B league isn’t working.  I should contact the LAHPA web master, whoever that is.

Stars – Bob Wise – 6 foot 1, 210 from Louisville.  Bob is our Rock on Defense.  Solid in all phases and that’s why he’s the Cap’n.  Bob lives clean but hits hard.  He’s typically one of the Stars leaders in PIM and is okay with physical play.  Eddie Rooney – 6 foot 3, 210 from Louisville.  Eddie is a mild-mannered school teacher by day and on Sunday Night, he sort of Hulks into some crazy-eyed Jeckyl and Hyde guy.  Intensity is his middle name and if you want to know more, just drift near the crease when Eddie’s on the ice.

Todd Nall – 6 feet even, 190 from Closeby.  Todd anchors our second line on D but has the skills to skate up when needed.  A smart hockey player with a really short temper, Todd gives Bob Wise a run for his PIM money each season.  He’s back from his sabbatical and he’s never played better.

Tom “The New Guy”.  Tom goes 6 feet and about 190.  He’s on his second tour with the Stars and he’s done whatever we’ve asked of him.  He’s coming into his own on Defense and has been a consistent contributor.  He’s literally played every position except goalie but has done great the last couple of weeks in place of…

Rod Patterson.  Rod is out temporarily on our Injured Reserve.  A little wild-eyed, Rod is our motivation and we’re not the same without him around.  We know he’s rooting for us but not nearly as hard as we’re rooting for him.  He’ll be back in 2007 and when he does, he’s buying the first round…
