| Attendance: All students must attend a minimum of 180 days per year, 4 1/2 hours per day. Subjects: Students must receive basic academic instruction in the following subject areas: reading, language arts, math, social studies, and science. Qualifications: Georgia law requires a high school diploma or GED for a teaching parent. Private tutors other than parents must have a high school diploma or GED. Notice: A declaration of intent must be filed with the local superintendent within 30 days of commencing the home study program and by September 1 annually thereafter. Record keeping: Families must maintain attendance records and submit such records monthly to the superintendent. In Forsyth County, attendance reports are due by the 10th of each month. In addition, families must write and retain an annual progress report for each child educated at home. Testing: A nationally recognized standardized test must be administered every 3 years beginning at the end of the 3rd grade. The results of the standardized test are not submitted to the school authority, but are to be retained at home. |
