CHILDS SIZE PENNSYLVANIA FOLKY BLANKET CHEST.
Softwood pine and poplar, circa 1840s, hand-dovetailed with
interior till and unique folky cutout feet in shape of turnip or vase
form. The feet, mortised up
into the bottom of the chest, were likely the rural cabinetmaker’s
adaptation of a lathe-turned foot, as seen on the piece above.
Having no means to turn the wood, he cut the feet from thick wood,
creating an unusual vernacular chest.
The original crazed chocolate brown paint retaining an untouched
dry surface. 35 ½” x 16 ¼” x 20 ¼” high.
