In time, there comes for each of us, a place in which we begin to look back on our lives. This retrospection can lead us to the pursuit of our family genealogy. It is with the deepest of respect and knowledge of life's transience, that we dedicate this site to our ancestors and to our descendants. We hope that you will enjoy our company and that our tiny corner in the vastness of cyberspace will leave you with some new idea or some old familiar feeling.

  Our Cemetery Project

While working on Bill's families, we have had occasion to visit many cemeteries in our county in search of ancestral connections. We returned time and again to the same cemetery to locate a relative that we had missed on previous trips. Eventually it became apparent that we needed to record the data for the entire cemetery, as it seemed that most of those interred were related in one way or another. It was then that the idea of recording the data for all the cemeteries in Rabun County was born.

Miscellany

You might have wondered why we chose to title our web site as we did. Well, the above picture might give you a clue! We live on a hill in a little cabin with Eastern Hemlock trees all around! We have actually referred to our home as Hemlock Hill. So, there you have it...an explanation! I followed the theme of this tree in the background image on the main pages of the site. It was developed from a pen and ink drawing that I did several years ago. With the help of my scanner and a graphics program, I put the old drawing to good use!

Eastern Hemlock: Tsuga canadensis

Thoughts

Our ancestry is Southern and our heritage as rich as the dark soil of the Mississippi River Delta, as old as the soft, ancient hills of the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains. Our forefathers were of myriad religious persuasions, from Quaker to Baptist, and their occupations were as varied. They were doctors and politicians, farmers and weavers, outlaws and miners. So diverse were they, that we have inherited manifest abilities and ideologies. We are full with choice!

Further, we are the inheritors of strength-the sort that brought our ancestors across oceans, to uncharted wilderness, to build a new home for their families. We are the recipients of courage, born of the trials of our pioneer forbears and the faith of their purpose.

We are the preservers of the history of these, whose lives insured our own. We are those which compile the history of they who have gone before, insurance for the future generations. We are blest.
