Where She Is

The trembling staccato of birds
                   thrums the glassy air.
One dives the distance from tree to

porch, lands perceptibly close
                   to her house that yawns
         in the vaporous

hush. The Shamel Ash rattles
its mane in a gust and aureate clusters
         of leaves descend on

the lawn, maracas. The din
                   on the near avenue elevates
         her vessel of sleep. Wakefulness,

fluid as air, sloshes in
in waves, then out, farther out.
         In the other room her

baby sings, and her milk lets down.
