Mountain Gods

Apaches believed before mankind
crawled out of the ground, Mountain Spirits
lived in this place. Bronze statues
of these Gahns welcome me to the casino.
A long window in the lobby grants
a clear view of Sierra Blanca.

As I sit on a leather sofa,
the red rim of evening sun drops
behind snow-covered summit,
and I wonder if Spirits still live here.

           neon lights
           a barn swallow's nest
           beneath the eaves
