August Affair

When wings of every kind of living thing
seem set on August mating, when mayflies
wrestle dragonflies over damselflies in distress;

Where wasps, moths, and felonious hornets pump
midges with fruity pollen-shooters, where leafhoppers
and delinquent butterflies conspire to score divorced cicada;

What lingers sticky, wet and weightless like a honey lemon kiss?

How life full presses courting, makes love to itself
in floozy see-through-flutter wear, all at once in buoyant air.
Why, even white monarchs hum in heat, exude distinct perfume.
