parents from
Mr. Cone served as a
courier in the American Revolution at the age of 16, and was taken prisoner on

The following is the
Will of Aaron B. Cone who was buried at Ivanhoe,
In the name of God -
Amen.
I, Aaron Cone of the
State of Georgia and County of Bulloch, being infirm in body but in perfect
memory, thanks be to God, calling into mind the mortality of my body and
knowing that it was appointed for all men to die, I make and ordain this my
last will and testament. That is to say
principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul unto the honor of
Almighty God that gave it and my body to the ground to be buried in a decent
and Christian manner and form at the discretion of my friend and Executor,
nothing doubting but I shall at the last general resurrection receive it again
by the power of Almighty God. And as
touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me within
this life I do give and dispose of in the following manner -
Firstly, I do give and
grant unto my son Peter Cone the following tracts of land. One tract surveyed for and granted to Wm.
Secondly, I do give
and grant unto my son James Cone one Negro man named Jack, one rifle gun and
one large pot; he has had his bed and furnature.
Thirdly, I do give and
grant unto my son Robert Cone one Negro by named Dick, one large pot, also one
musket gun; he has had his bed and furnature.
Fourthly, I do give
and grant unto my son Barber Cone three tracts of land surveyed for myself in
Bulloch County, Tommy McCall's land and great Ogechee; one tract of five
hundred acres granted to me on the 14th of October 1873 and the two other
tracts of land, one contains four hundred forty four acres, the other last
tract contains six hundred acres. Each
one of the two last mentioned tracts were granted to
me on
Fifthly, I do give and
grant unto my son Aaron Cone the following tracts or parcels of land viz. the
first tract granted originally to Rheuben Bynam (then
Sixthly, I do give
unto my grandson John Goodman one bed and furnature.
Seventhly, I do give
and grant unto my grandsons Joseph Cone and William Cone, jointly, the
following tracts or parcels of land viz. the first tract granted originally to
Nathaniel Lunday (then Effingham but now
Eighthly, I give and
grant unto my daughter Sarah Goodman one Negro girl named Lindy and her bed and
furnature.
Ninthly, I do give and
grant unto my daughter Ann Jones two Negro girls named Polly and
Sharlotte. She has had her bed and
furnature.
Tenthly, I do give and
grant unto my daughter Keziah Sheffield two Negro girls named Zilpha and
Amy. She has had her bed and furnature.
Eleventhly, I do give
and grant unto my daughter Frances Cone two Negro girls named Phebe and Eliza
and her bed and furnature.
Twelvthly, I do give
and grant unto my daughter Susannah Cone two Negro girls named Lucy and Sarah
and her bed and furnature. And I charge
and direct my sons James Cone and Barber Cone to act as guardian for Susannah
Cone, John Goodman, Joseph Cone, and William Cone until they come of age or do
choose their own guardians.
My stock of cattle are
to remain on the plantation for the use of my family except thirteen cows and
calves for Joseph Cone and William Cone jointly next spring, and to John
Goodman ten cows and calves next spring, also ten cows and calves and five cows
and yearlings to my beloved wife Hannah Cone next spring and also to her ten
steers of this description: four three
year old steers and six two year old steers.
First I want to have
so many of my steers sold as will pay my debts and the remainder of the steers
from two years old and upwards to be left for the use of my family. The balance of my stock of cattle to be
divided as follows: first to Sarah
Goodman, secondly to Barber Cone, third to Frances Cone, fourth to Aaron Cone,
fifthly to Susannah Cone. To each one of
those five last mentioned persons six cows and calves a piece, the remainder of
my she cattle and sucklings to be equally divided between my following
children: Sarah Goodman, A. Jones,
Barber Cone, Kezia Sheffield, Aaron Cone, Susannah Cone, Robert Cone is to have
a beef every year and Barber Cone is to have a beef every year after he leaves
the family out of the stock left for my family.
The balance of the steers are not to be made use of only as the
necessities of the family calls for them.
I leave my stock of hogs, sheep, goats, bee-hives and crops for the
careful use of my family. Also my horse,
mule and oxen, my horse Fed and my wife's saddle , her bed and furnature I give
to my beloved wife Hannah Cone. Also I
leave a sugar mill , two carts, handmill, plantation tools, household and
kitchen furnature are all to be left for the use of my family. Also it is my wish that my daughter Sarah Goodman
to have the management and control of everything about the house except my
wife's room. She is to have the
privilege of that. Also it is my wish
for Barber Cone to have the management and control of everything on the
plantation as long as he lives with the family.
When Barber leaves the family the management and control of the
plantation will fall on Aaron Cone. I
leave my Negro man Dick and Mary his wife are to work for my family until my
grandson William Cone arrives at the age of twenty one years. After then I do intend that they (my Negro
man Dick and Mary his wife) shall belong to my son Aaron Cone, likewise the
houshold and kitchen furnature to belong to my son Aaron Cone. I wish my son Barber Cone to pay to Mr.
George Mikell five dollars - I have paid to him all but the five dollars for
finishing the woodwork of a wagon, and when it is finished for Barber Cone to
iron it off, afterwards to sell it and to take his pay for the work he does to
it out of the money which he gets for it.
The overplus of the money to go to the use of my family. I wish my son Barber Cone to sell my mill
irons and still to appropriate the money which they fetch for the use of my
family. My daughter Sarah Goodman is to
have the command of every thing about the house excepts she gets married. My son Aaron Cone must, after Barber leaves
the place, try to make support for the family with the hands that are left on
the plantation unless he does marry. If
he does he is to have the privilege of the little room, and a sufficient
quantity of land to tend together with an equal part of the cow-penned
land. Also he is to have my mark and
brand. If my beloved wife cannot stay
with the family I want her to have the sixth part of my stock of cattle left
for the support of my family.
I do appoint James
Cone, Allen Jones, and Barber Cone my lawful Executors to have full power over
my estate so as to carry my will into complete effect.
In witness herewith I
have set my hand and seal in presence of us.

Notes for PETER CONE:
General Peter Cone was the eldest child of
Aaron Cone and grandson of William Cone, R.S.
His father was a wealthy man, owned large landed estates with many
slaves, and carried on extensive operations.
He was much esteemed in Bulloch County and a member of the Baptist
Church. Peter Cone never married.
When in the War of 1812, inheriting the
family trait, Peter Cone enlisted, became a captain and was stationed at Fort
Sunbury. In 1818 he served under General
Andrew Jackson in his Florida Campaign.
In the Battle at Tallahassee, General Andrew Jackson turned to his aid,
Captain Peter Cone, and said "Strike me a match, Cone, and we'll burn this
place down."

Notes for BARBER CONE:
Barber Cone and many
other Cone family members are buried in the cemetery at the Old Fellowship
Baptist Church. It is located southeast
of Statesboro, Ga on US Highway 80 about 3 miles east of the turnoff to
Stilson, Bulloch County, Ga.
1850 Census records of
Bulloch County, Ga. shows Barber Cone, age 47; Aaron, age 14; John, age 13;
Georgia, age 12; America, age 10; Paul, age 7.
Eliza is not listed and apparently had died prior to the census. Barber is shown as being owner of 4,000
acres.

Nellie came South with
her father who was a jeweler in Savannah, Ga where they lived until the Yellow
Fever epidemic when they moved to Bulloch County near Ivanhoe. She had previously married a Mr. Breckenridge
in Boston, Mass. where her father had moved in order that she have music
lessons.
