| This page is intended for use by readers/fans of the Grand Master
of Science Fiction Robert Anson Heinlein. It is intended particularly for
current and prospective members of
The Heinlein Society, and for the posters on alt.fan.heinlein and
sff.discuss.heinlein-forum newsgroups and participants of the Heinlein
Readers Group. The HRG regularly meets every second Thursday and Saturday
to discuss Heinlein and his works using Aol's Instant Messager service.
Archived Logs of the HRG are to be found at
http://heinleinsociety.org/readersgroup/index.html.
If you wish to receive direct notices of new postings, please e-mail me at dwrighsr@alltel.net..Your e-mail address will be added to my list as well as that of David Silver and Bill Patterson for other Heinlein related notices. You can get the AIM Chat program for PC or MAC at AOL's Download Site. Note: The version of AIM which comes with Netscape 7.x has neither the
Create Shortcut mentioned below nor does the 'direct link' below work correctly.
The latest version available on the download site, (currently 5.2), does work as before.
Once you have the AIM program loaded, and if you are running on Windows 95/98, You may create a shortcut to the room yourself. To create this shortcut, Click on 'File' and 'Save As'. Save in any convenient location, (Desktop preferably) You may then invite anyone on your 'buddy list' to join you there or others with the shortcut may join automatically. P.S. to MAC users and users of Netscape 7.x (as mentioned above): The shortcut method does not work for you. However there is another easy way besides the link above, that anyone can use to enter the group discussion room without having to be invited. This works for PC users as well as MAC users and should work for users of other platforms. This is done as described in the next paragraph. When you execute the AIM program you can invite any person in your 'buddy list', real or fictitious, to a chat. This will generate a chat room with a uniquely named room, e.g. 'Chat 39394446324005551841'. Prior to opening the room, change this name to 'Heinlein Readers Group chat". (Make sure you spell it correctly) and then click on 'send' to open the room. (Use "The Lanai" for the new room mentioned below). If you used a fictitious name, then a message will appear saying that the fictitious person is not available. A real person may accept or decline. To make it simpler and to avoid the possibility that your fictitious name actually might be a real one that you don't know about, you can add your own registered name to your buddy list and issue an invite to chat to yourself. In all cases, don't forget to change the name of the room as mentioned above. You will either be the first person to open the room or you will join it in progress. Once in the room, if you are on a PC, you will be able to create the shortcut icon described above. Thereafter, you may enter the room at any time by executing AIM and clicking on the shortcut icon. Anyone, at any time, can invite others on their 'buddy list' to join the chat room. Note: you will be able to see any online AOL users in your 'buddy list', and thanks to a recent upgrade, they will be able to join the room without running AIM software. If anyone actually uses the room at any time to talk about Heinlein and wants to preserve the log for posterity, please use the 'File' and 'Save As' to save the file. When finished. e-mail me at dwrighsr@alltel.net with the log attached and I will post it on the Archives page of The Heinlein Society's web site Recently a room for informal get-togethers called The Lanai has been created Here. This is purely for social purposes and may have people visiting for a chat 24/7. Everyone is invited to attend. All of the tips described above for HRG apply to this room as well. David Wright
