The Diary, starting in January, 1860, is an every day account of the lives of the family of Hannah Walton Sanders, who lived in Wythe Co. VA across New River from the old Shot Tower at Jackson's Ferry.

The next few paragraphs gives a history of the events surroundng the Diary of Hannah Walton Sanders is taken in part from Sanders Saga, written by Catherine McConnell Sanders, McClure Press (place of publication, not noted on book), 1972 (LCC # 72-90924) Pages referenced below in text. The actual diaries are two paper booklets, bound in string. I have possession of the second diary, Jan-June 1861, and Debbie Kelley of Draper, VA, has possession of the first diary, Jan-June 1860. Numbers have been assigned to people repeated in the diary and referenced in the following paragraphs.

(1)The author of the diaries is Hannah Walton Sanders (b.2-5-1806, d. 11-28-1876), married 6-2-1825 in Mt. Airy, NC to William John Sanders (b. 4-30-1797, d. 4-14-1873), of Wythe Co. VA. Hannah refers to her husband as "Mr. Sanders" in the diary, and he was also known as John Sanders, Jr.

Hannah's parents were Anne Jackson Raper(sister of Thomas Jackson, noted below) and Richard Walton, who immigrated in 1800 to Wythe Co and lived near the Lead Mines. Hannah's brother was George Walton, who married Senah Newell Sanders.(d/o William Sanders and and Mary "Polly" Newell){Ref from above book made to History of Wythe County, by Jouet McGavock Boyd}. (p. 223)

Thomas Jackson was from near Appleby, Westmoreland, England, and his trade was lead mining. He settled in Wythe Co. in 1793. He talked his relatives to come over from England to settle in Virginia and mine lead. These included, John Jackson and family, his sister, Mrs.Ann Jackson Raper, (whose husband died shortly after immigrating to Virginia en route from Richmond to Wythe Co.),and her children, one daughter and three sons John, William, and Robert Raper;the Parkins and the Waltons. Mrs. Raper arrived in Wythe Co. in 1802 and married Richard Walton. The lead Mines were across the river from Trigg Cemetery at Austinville and many of these people are buried there. (pp 222-223)

Around 1801,Thomas Jackson and James Newell rented the lead mines. Then in 1806, Thomas Jackson, David Peirce and Daniel Sheffey bought them. In 1808, there were some lawsuits between the partners and it was not settled until 1831 (referenced in the above-mentioned book - Ref: Jackson vs. Peirce-Chancery Bk. 9, Wythe Co. Court). Thomas Jackson had died intestate. David Peirce was awarded 13/24ths, and Thomas Jackson's heirs were awarded 11/12ths. Robert Raper, Hannah's half-brother, his brother John's and brother William's children's interest in the mines, and John Sanders, owned interest through his wife, Hannah Walton Sanders, in about 1834, started the manufacture of lead under the name of Raper & Sanders, which operated from 1834 to 1838. (pp 222-223)

Thomas Jackson owned a lot of the land near the lead mines. His farm was Jackson Ferry Farm, bought in 1815. "On a hill near the ferry, he build a shot tower of stone, so carefully selected and firmly placed that it still stands today, attesting to, not only the ingenuity, but the patience, perseverance, courage, and indomitable will peculiar to the pioneer heros of "The Old Wythe Lead Mines." (pp. 223). When he died, 1/2 of his estate was given to his sister, Mrs. Richard Walton and her children, and the other half of the sons of his brother, Michael. Michael's grandson, Hon. Michael Hastwell Jackson, presented the parcel of land which the shot tower is on to the DAR. (pp. 222-223)

Hannah and Wm. John Sanders were going to elope. She got dressed, climbed out of the window of her bedroom and got in the buggy (another version of the story says they went horse back)with John. She forgot her gloves, and had to climb back into the window and get them The old log house is still standing near the shot tower. John Sanders worked at Saltworks in Smyth Co. and was in charge of waggoners.(p. 13)

In 1837, John and Hannah deeded land for what is now the Methodist Brick Church. It's use was as a Union Meeting House where all denominations could worship. (p. 15)

The homeplace was on New River, across from the Shot Tower. It was washed away in the flood of 1878.Hannah was 57 years old at the time she wrote this portion of her diary. The New River was frozen and they had to cut channels in the river and then they would run some sort of boat or canoe thru the channel to get across. The only other way was to walk. Apparently, Mr. John Sanders, Jr, had some involvement with the Walton Furnace Lead Mines at this time. Back in those days, when people came over for dinner, they would spend the night on many occasions.

I have referenced people mentioned below with numbers in parentheses, so they can be identified in the diary.

Aunt Senah,(11)Hannah's aunt - [Mamie Senah Newell, d/o James Newell(24) and Sally Wood], and Uncle Adams Sanders(12) [s/o Robert Sanders and Catherine Ganaway]had no children and they lived at "Morroco Fields" which was also a plantation on New River. (pp 80,90,`97)

(13)William Peirce was involved in the lead mines and lived at Poplar Camp. (p 189)
