What do we, as technical writers, do? First, we look at who the audience is and what they need to get from this document. Once we have assessed the audience, we start gathering and sifting through information to determine which information about the product or service we should include to meet the audience's needs.
We then put this information into the best delivery method for the material, whether it is online web-delivered help, on-computer online help, hard-copy manuals or quick start guides, or some combination of all methods.
When we piece the information together, we make sure that it is written at a level that is appropriate for the audience. We try to make it as easy to read and concise as possible, while maintaining technical accuracy.
Along the way, we test the products and procedures. In the process of gathering information, reviewing specifications, and trying out the product or procedure, we find design flaws that we bring to the attention of the responsible parties.
